I have been busy lately but don’t really have anything to show for it. Michael Luke and I have been doing some Spring cleaning around the house. I mean giving everything a good scrub down, purging and rearranging the closets, and organizing all our “stuff”.
One thing I do have to show is my new flowers that ML gave me for my birthday yesterday!
These pretty little flowers are Purslanes. They are the color Pazazz Red Flare and are my favorite. He gives them to me every year for my birthday. I love them because they require so little maintenance and are always loaded with blooms. This is good since God didn’t bless me with the best green thumb.
Michael Luke brought them home and planted them for me Wednesday night.
They always do great in this flower bed that lines our sidewalk. Last year we added some ground cover to the bed to fill in the areas where we didn’t have any Purslane. I’m not sure what the ground cover is called but it roots and spreads easily. Which makes it another plant I love! I spread it everywhere.
Every night the blooms on the Purslanes close and then once the sun hits them they open again.
The colorful blooms make me happy every time I walk by them.
Purslanes are incredibly drought tolerant so they do well once we get to the middle of our sweltering summer days down here in the South. The little tag on them says they need 8+ hours of sun a day but ours don’t get that much. They probably get somewhere between 4-6 hours a day.
We still have a lot of work to do to our front yard (cut the grass, trim the shrubs, and who knows what else) but the addition of the Purslanes is a start!
Do you have a favorite flower that you plant every year? Do you have any Purslanes? What do you like to use as a ground cover?

So pretty! I don’t have a green thumb either, but I want to! I’ve never heard of these beauties before, but now I want to go find some!!
At least with flowers like these we can pretend that we have a green thumb!

my mom had a whole bed of Purslanes – they would just explode in color, i love them! i also love zinnias – lots of color, too, and very forgiving of the not-so-green-thumbed :o) your walkway will be gorgeous all summer!
So pretty and I love that they need so little care or feeding (I’m a notorious plant killer!). I’m going through Nester’s party and pinning any/all plants that might survive my brown thumb!
🙂

That is such a great idea! I need to go back and pin several different ones that would work for our house.
Those a pretty! We got a bunch of plants for our housewarming party! Some pink azaleas and a beautiful blue hydrangea! I can’t wait to plant them!
Plants would be a pretty cool housewarming gift. Azaleas are so pretty when they are blooming. I can’t wait to see what your yard will look like after you get them planted.
I have never planted purslane! Yours is beautiful and is inspiring me to give it a try.
Thanks so much for joining the garden party! 🙂
Thank you! I love how little effort they require. It’s a little treat every time I walk to my car!
