Kitchen Inspiration Board

The other week I showed you the artwork that I am using as the basis for the design of our kitchen renovation.  Then I shared some rugs that I found that I thought would work well in the kitchen.  I really appreciate everyone’s thoughts and opinions.  The majority of you chose the aqua rug from World Market.

And by the end of it all, I was right there with you… crushing on the aqua rug.  So I decided to go ahead and order it, but when I did, I found out they were sold out of the size I needed.  And it would be on back order for a long time.  Complete let down.  My hopes went up for a little while when I found out that this rug was sold in several other stores, but they were all sold out of the size I needed.  I guess this means we all picked a very popular rug… too bad it’s impossible to find!  So I did what any girl who has aqua/turquoise rug set on her heart would do… I Googled images for aqua/turquoise rugs and found this little guy.

He’s a little bit brighter than the original aqua rug from World Market, but I think he fits the job description.  After I showed ML my find, I got the go ahead to order it.  The rug came in last week, and we both love it!  I am looking forward to showing it to you but first wanted to give you a visual idea of what I have in mind for the kitchen renovation, because if you are anything like ML, this will be incredibly helpful to decipher all the thoughts going around in my brain.

My Sunshine Kitchen

It’s not all set in stone yet (no pun intended), except for the rug.  Most of the images are just for inspirational purposes, but this is definitely the look I am going for.  Oh, and did you notice the rug is reversible.  How cool is that?
Since we have a cream colored tile floor, I want to use a darker color on the cabinets.  This will provide a bit of a contrast and eliminate the cream on cream we currently have going on right now.  I want to keep it simple with the backsplash by adding white ceramic subway tile for a classic look.  We hope to update the counter, lighting and hardware as well and finish replacing our appliances, so they will all match (black).
Here’s our kitchen currently for a little visual reference.
I am so excited that the renovation is officially under way with the purchase of the new rug and have already started ordering samples for the counter.  I look forward to sharing the whole process with you!
So what do you think of the rug selection and my kitchen inspiration board?  Which should come first… painting the cabinets, painting the walls, or replacing the counter tops?

I’m really excited about the darker cabinets. I think paired with the light yellow it will bring lots of sophistication to the room.

I have always liked dark cabinets. Remember our old kitchen when y’all were growing up. They don’t show smudges!! Your McCarty pottery will look great with the new kitchen!
