My Passive Walls

I’m a little embarrassed to share this project with you. Not at all because it is bad but because Michael Luke and I completed it back in June.  Gulp. Yep, June and I’m finally getting around to blogging about it. Why?  Well lot’s of things but mainly because I got tired of editing pictures on my old laptop.  I shared a little about it a couple of years ago here.  In a nutshell… a nine year old Mac and Photoshop really aren’t that compatible.

I’ve since dumped the Apple and switched over to a Chromebook and now I’ve got speed and lots of new picture editing apps to play with!  So, let’s get this show on the road.

Our master bath has been an renovation in process for the last two plus years.  Not like one of those renovations where you don’t have any cabinets or floors for months on end but a room that we work on here and there.

This past summer we decided it was finally time to paint the walls.

No matter how many times I paint a room it never ceases to amaze me how much better a fresh coat of paint can make a room look.  I mean, it just blew my mind every time I walked in there and the room felt twice the size as what it used to.  That my friends is a can of paint well spent.

Just as a little fun reminder here’s a little Throw Back Thursday picture of what it used to look like.

master bathroomWe definitely have a more sophisticated looking bathroom now.  The colors have slowly shifted from red undertones to cool blue undertones.  This change in undertone is what really opens the room up.  This has happened with the counters, the cabinets and now the walls.

So what wall color did we choose?  We went with Sherwin Williams #7064 Passive.  Selecting this paint color was a little more difficult than I originally thought it would be because I had to find one that worked with both our master bedroom (Sherwin Williams Rain) and the girls room (Sherwin Williams Silver Strand) since they both have doors leading to the master bath.  Sherwin Williams Passive works with both of them and really helps the rooms to flow together.

sherwin williams passive, master bathYou know how projects always seem quicker in your minds than what they are in real life.  Well, this one was no different.  It was supposed to be a quick Saturday morning project… that turned into an entire weekend project.  Go figure.  It was fun getting to spend so much time with Michael Luke and it was our first big DIY project since bringing Esther home.

We finished though and as usual the reward is sweet.  I feel like I have a new master bath!sherwin williams passive, master bathNext up in this epic saga of our master bath renovation?

sherwin williams passive, master bathNew tile floors that run the full length of the bathroom!  Yep, I’m pretty excited about it.  We don’t have any selected yet but we have both come to the conclusion that we are hiring someone to do this project for us.  If not, we might really end up going months without a floor… and I can’t have that.  It’s still a ways off though.  We have tossed around the idea of doing it before Christmas but we will just have to wait and see!

Ok, so go ahead… tell me what one project if attempted in your house would end up taking you months to complete.  Be honest.  If it pops in your head quickly it might be a good indication that hiring professional help is the best route for you. There is no shame in it.

White Cabinets

This post is the first of series of post that will focus on some of the projects we have been working on in our bathroom… this year. Yep, this first upgrade I started all the way back during The Great Snow Storm of 2014 back in January. While Ml was stranded at work for 2+ days I decided to make use of my time and give our cabinets a little update using our leftover trim paint.

Nothing fancy and no step by step guide needed. I just simply grabbed my brush and covered each cabinet with about three coats of paint each. Thin layers are key.

I planned to have them completely finished and rehung by the time Michael Luke got back home but as we all know projects are normally a lot quicker in our heads than in real time. Does anybody else struggle with this? Six doors are a lot to paint… especially when you are painting front and back plus three coats each. That’s thirty-six doors!!!

So the storm came and went and the project continued. It continued so much that we went to Hong Kong and back and then settled in with Esther for another two or three months before I finally had enough sanity to complete this little update.

By this point I was actually concerned if Esther would be thrown for a loop once our cabinets had doors. Seriously. I got it done and thankfully it wasn’t too big of a shock for her.

For all it’s hard work and time it did end up consuming it was completely worth it.

So for a little fun here is a before and after comparison.Master bath dolce vita

Not bad, eh? Over the next few weeks I will be sharing some of our other bathroom projects. I won’t leave you in the dark though… heres a few hints. Paint. More cabinets. More Paint. Tile pricing.

Now I want to hear from you. Is anyone else thrown off by all this cool southern summer weather? We went swimming yesterday in seventy degree weather!!!! I could get use to this. Maybe even get an outdoors project or two completed.

Meanwhile…

We are still working on finishing the backsplash
in our kitchen.  Well, I should say Michael Luke is still
working.  He is doing an amazing job but it’s hard for him to
find the free time to finish it up so it may be another week or two
before I post finished pictures. Meanwhile… Remember back at the
beginning of the year?  When we replaced our kitchen
counters with Formica 180 FX in Dolce Vita.  Well,
our kitchen counters weren’t the only thing we replaced.
Master Bath Dolce VitaWe figured while we were at it why not replace the counters in the master bath as well.
Replacing the counters was already on our To-Do list. So
since we were already paying for labor and the additional cost for
the actual material wasn’t that much extra we decided now was as
good a time as any.master bath dolce vita Our white porcelain sinks looked so beautiful with the Dolce Vita counters that I had to add more white accents.  Like the family picture of us in the
white frame.  master bath dolce vitamaster bath dolce vita
master bath dolce vita You may have noticed in the picture above that there is a small strip of wood exposed underneath the counter.  This is because our new counters sit 3/4″ higher than our previous ones. This small change in height
might have frustrated some people but for me it was the go ahead to
paint our existing cabinets a beautiful white.  In case you
are wondering I haven’t been secretly working on painting them yet.
Priority numero uno is to finish the kitchen first and then
maybe work on sprucing up the master bath some more.master bath dolce vita I was loving the white accents so much that I swapped out the pottery
that Noah’s supplies used to sit on for this beautiful Vera Bradley
tray. master bath dolce vitaI also relocated this keepsake frame with our room key from the first night of our honeymoon at The Peabody. The white just looks so amazing on the
counters that I can’t get enough of it right now! master bath dolce vita
Master bath dolce vitaFuture plans for the bathroom include painting the cabinets and walls as well as installing new floor tile throughout the entire bathroom.  To be honest
though, I don’t see any of that happing too soon.  We need to
finish the kitchen first and then we will have a better idea of a
timeline. Meanwhile… Do you have any projects that require more
of your free time to finish them? Are you getting any of the snow
from the storm that is pummeling through the north east.  I
don’t know what we would do if we ever got that much snow at one
time.  Just a half an inch of snow shuts down the entire city
here in Birmingham!
