Personalized Fall Decor

Last week, I revealed my Fall door decor.  I am really loving it, and the cheerfulness it brings to the front door.

When I envisioned this in my head, I knew it needed to be constructed out of styrofoam and covered in moss.  In my dream I thought I could just go out and buy a styrofoam “S”.  Well, not at Hobby Lobby.  Here is what I did use though.

I wish I had used green styrofoam instead of white.  The green is about twice the price though.  I was trying to keep the cost down.  Besides, I had plenty of moss to cover the entire surface area.  The mums and berry branches I was able to get for 50% off at Hobby Lobby.  Which to me made for a reasonable price… not sure I would have paid full price for them.

The first thing I did was draw an “S” so I would know where to cut.  You can see I just kept playing with it until I got it the way I wanted.  I have never excelled in neatness.  Don’t worry about it being sloppy looking; once you cut it out and cover it, it won’t matter.

After I cut the “S” out with a box cutter, I was ready to start gluing the moss.  At first, I used Elmer’s Glue because Wal-Mart was out of glue sticks for my hot glue gun.

Even though this method worked, I would not suggest it (unless you prefer green, sticky hands).  Thankfully, for the back and sides I was able to use hot glue, and the whole process went much faster and a lot cleaner.

After covering the “S” with moss,  I started gluing the mums which I had plucked off the flower stems.  They are made to come right off.  Before applying the glue, I laid them out to see how it would look and make sure everything looked good.  Then I just applied some glue to the back (still using Elmer’s at this point) and stuck it in the styrofoam.

Next, I cut the berry twigs off the main branch, stuck each piece into the open glue bottle, and then poked them into the styrofoam.  Once in, I would bend and shape to give the arrangement dimension.  (I still had not applied moss to the sides at this point.)

Here you can see the sides after the moss was applied.  It really gave a fullness to the arrangement.

I am pleased with how this turned out.  It was easy but would have been a lot easier if I had used hot glue from the beginning.  Oh well, sometimes you just have to work with what you have.

Either way I still ended up with a beautiful Fall decoration.  Even though I hung mine on the front door… I really think it could go anywhere you want to display it.  Has anybody else made something to decorate their house with for Fall recently?

Moss, Mums, and Twigs

My Fall decorating has spread from the mantel to the front door.  I have never decorated the front door for anything other than Christmas, so I had to start from scratch on my design.  I started by searching Pinterest for inspiration but didn’t find anything I wanted to use.

So I decided to go with an idea I originally thought about using for above the mantel.  The letter “S” for our last name covered in moss, mums, and twigs.

I liked this idea because it is different than the typical fall wreath but personalized because of the letter “S”.  I wanted to use vibrant colors… sometimes I feel our Fall decorations are a little more subdued, but nature really becomes vibrant in color during the Fall.  The orange and yellow pop against the green background.  I’ll go in to how I made it in another post.  I would love to now, but this week has just been crazy.  Hopefully, I’ll have some time this weekend to catch back up.  But I was happy to get all the supplies for under 20 bucks because of a great BOGO sale at Hobby Lobby.  Since I used artificial flowers, this is an arrangement that will be good from year to year.

I think it looks perfect on our door.  What do you think?  The “S” doesn’t seem to be too tall or wide.  Some people like an overstatement though.  So whatever works for you.

Here’s a shot from further out so you can see it on the entire door.  (You can also catch a glimpse of me in the reflection.  At least I wore a yellow shirt to match!)It adds a little Fall touch to the front of our house… and hopefully makes it look inviting too.  I don’t want our door screaming, “Back off!… Summer’s over and now I’m depressed.”

Like the mantel this Fall decor will also last thru November.  Isn’t it nice to get a couple of months out of your decorations?

I am linking up over at Rhoda’s Fall link party!
