Tans, Sun, and Ombre

Happy Saturday, y’all!

Here in Birmingham today is just too pretty of a day not to thank God for.  It’s the promise that Spring is just around the corner.  And just in time for Spring is this beautiful pair of earrings available now at Color Created Family!

Pink Ombre Crochet Earrings

I received a special order last month to crochet a round pair of ombre earrings.

They turned out so well that I decided to make a diamond shaped pair adorned with a gold glass bead.

Pink ombre earrings

I love how well the gold pairs with the warm tones of the pink… perfect for Spring, Summer, and a golden tan… if you tan (my skin refuses to).  These crochet earrings make me want to pair them with a long flowing skirt and the beach.  Can earrings really make you want to go to the beach?  I guess so since that’s what happens when I look at these.

Tan or not if you would like snatch these pink ombre crochet earrings for yourself hop on over to Color Created Family on Etsy and make them yours.  Something tells me they won’t be there long.

Happy weekend!

Is anybody else getting anxious for Spring?  Warm weather? Picnics and the park? What is your favorite thing about Spring?  Mine is the few weeks when the temperatures are absolutely perfect, the sun is shining, and the mosquitoes have yet to come into full force… that when I love to go to the park, lay on a blanket and read… or chase after Noah.

P.S. Remember to use discount code CTF10 for a 10% discount.  And as always you can access Color Created Family through the Mini Etsy shop on the right or one of the Color Created Family ad squares on the right.

The Pinterest Challenge

I freaked out a little last week when Sherry announced the Fall Pinterest Challenge for today. With such a busy schedule lately, it put tackling something this past weekend out of the question. So I thought a little more about it and realized I had already been taking on a Pinterest challenge.

In the past few months, I have fallen in love with crocheting. It has become my new pastime once Noah goes to bed. Learning to crochet was a slow and bumpy road in the beginning but so rewarding once I got the hang of a few different stitches.

Lately, I have been working on crocheting earrings.

A few weeks ago I came across these beautiful earrings while searching for crochet patterns on Pinterest.

It had never occurred to me that earrings could be crocheted. The colors were absolutely beautiful! Immediately, I knew crocheting earrings was something I wanted to learn how to do. I had several questions though.

Where do I find patterns for crochet earrings?

A quick Google search for crochet earring patterns brought me to Moria Crochets’ website.

Moria loves to design and share crochet patterns. Her claim that the earrings would only take 30 minutes to make won me over. Unfortunately, I have yet to make a pair that quickly. The first pair took me around three hours to crochet. ML was kind and reminded me that it was my first pair and that I would improve over time. He was right! It only takes me around an hour to make a pair now.

Not too shabby.

What type of yarn and hook do I use?

Moria suggests using regular sewing thread, but after checking out a few other sites, I decided to go with DMC embroidery floss.

DMC embroidery floss is offered in hundreds of beautiful colors and is made from long staple Egyptian cotton. Another plus for the embroidery floss is the beautiful sheen it has. Three strands of floss are used together to crochet each beautiful pattern. The length of each skein divided into two groups of three is enough to make two pair of earrings.

Prior to crocheting earrings, I had been using a 4 mm hook. So switching to a 1 mm hook took a little bit of getting used to. Working with something so small definitely requires my glasses. For a while I felt like a needed the magnifying glasses that surgeons use sometimes. This stuff is tiny!

Would other people be as captivated with these earrings as I am?

With just a few texts, tweets, and Instagram (follow me @krystle_colortransformedfamily) updates, I knew that others were definitely captivated by the beauty of these earrings.

Could this be something I could make and sell to other people? How?

Yes, I want to use the money I make from the sale of these earrings to help cover travel and other expenses for our adoption as we journey towards bringing home our child from Colombia Hong Kong. Helping financially in small ways like this makes me feel like such a Proverbs 31 woman. So after thinking about it, praying, and talking to Michael Luke about it, I decided to open my own Etsy shop.

Meet Color Created Family!

Color Created Family is my shop showcasing my handcrafted crochet earrings with more types of jewelry to come. There are several different patterns and color selections, but I have plans to add lots more. Any style earring shown can be made in your desired color of DMC embroidery floss. Just send me a message requesting your specific color that you want, and I will create a custom order for you.

When naming my shop, I contemplated using Color Transformed Family as the shop name. Unfortunately/fortunately, that used more letters than Etsy allowed for a store name. So after some brainstorming, I decided on Color Created Family. I love it and hope you do too!

I value and appreciate everyone who stops by to read my ramblings week after week. As a small thank you, I want to offer you a discount. Use coupon code CTF10 when checking out to receive a 10% discount off of your purchase. I would love it if you would hop on over to Color Created Family and take a look around. Let me know what you think and what you would love to see more of. For your convenience there is an Etsy link under the Follow Me tab on the right hand side bar as well as a glimpse of some of the products offered further down on the side bar. Clicking on either will take you directly to my Etsy shop.

Sweaters for Apes

First off, I would like to thank everyone for all the love, support, and encouragement of our adoption announcement. I was blown away by the number of you that took time out of your day to hear what God is doing in our lives. Thank you!

In other not so interesting news I managed to distract myself this past weekend with starting back to work on crocheting Noah’s sweater.

Update: It has taken me so long that it will no longer fit her and will instead become a nice purple sweater for Armstrong the ape.

Yes, I do realize that a purple sweater isn’t really fit for a guy but he already wears a tutu! Shhh… we won’t tell Noah.

Honestly I hoped to have more to show for it by now than I do but I have had to start over numerous times. I think I am finally getting the hang of it though and have been pinning away at different projects I would like to try a hook hand at.

Here are some of the cute ideas I have found on Pinterest…

I mean who can resist a sock monkey afghan?

If I start on this now I might have it finished by the time she reaches three years old. It’s beautiful though.

Seriously, no one is safe this Christmas. Crochet gifts here we come.

;

For any new moms or about to be moms out there leg warmers are the best! So much easier to change a diaper with them and just too adorable. I could probably whip up a few pair for Noah.

;

At least I don’t have to worry about the doll outgrowing any clothes I make her.

So there you have it… this is the crocheting nerd I have become. Now if you will excuse me I need to go put my glasses on and pull my hair back in a bun and finish that sweater!

What distracting projects have you been working on lately? Do you have a craft or hobby that consumes all your time when you are working on it? Or maybe you are just one of the cool kids.
