Christmas 2012: Our Mantel

This little elf momma has been busy decorating the house for Christmas.  Now if I could only clean up the mess I made doing it.  Does anybody else run into that same problem?  Sometimes, I’m like a tornado… leaving a path wherever I go!

So while the house may not be back in order yet, the mantel is decorated and spreading the Christmas cheer and warmth throughout the house.  So without further ado here is a picture overload (because that’s what we really care about) of the mantel.

Like before, I mainly used what we had in our Christmas decor stockpile.  I did splurge a little though by buying the beautiful poinsettia and the red ornaments on the garland.  But that’s my goal… to add a little each year.

I kept with the traditional red and green for my decorations this year. Mainly because that’s what I have but I have to tell you I am really digging all this red.  It is so cheerful and is really refreshing to see such bold color in our living room.  Could this be a sign of things to come decor wise in our home?

This is one of my favorite pictures of Michael Luke and me.  It was taken on our honeymoon and we used it as our first Christmas card together!  I love how the green contrast with the red so well and love setting it out every year.  Don’t we look young?  Not so much now but up until we frequently got asked if we were teenagers!  I’m 28 now and judging by the latest responses of the cashiers at the grocery store I might could pass as college student.  Forward progress!

The red ornaments are simple inexpensive shatterproof ornaments.  I bought some glass beads and hot glued them on to add a little pizzaz to them!  They are so cute I might have to add more next  year.

The little red flowers were only fifty cents at Jo-Ann.  In the past I have used them for decoration on gifts but I thought they worked perfectly placed sparingly in the garland. The white trees I have had for a few years but originally came from Wal-Mart.  Score one for EDLP (Every Day Low Prices)!  The best part about them is that they are plastic so I don’t have to worry about breaking them.

I think I have used this cross for every season this year.  It seems to always be appropriate and I couldn’t resist pairing it with our nativity scene.

Originally I didn’t plan for these little glass ornaments to hang over the ledge but the garland sort of fell that way I like the end result.

All our stocking are hung by the chimney with care.  (For more on our stockings click here.)

And here’s little Noah displaying her awe and wonderment of our tree.  Let’s just say it has been a real learning experience for her to restrain from grabbing every ornament off the tree!

I’ll be back later to share pics of our new tree (see our old one here) and our new ornament that symbolizes our anniversary from earlier this year (see all our other ornaments here).

Are you through decorating your house for Christmas?  Do you leave a path wherever you have been while decorating?  What are your favorite colors to decorate with for Christmas?  Traditional? Blue? Pink? Silver? Gold?

See how I worked with what we had on our Spring, and Fall mantels earlier this year.  Decorating for the season doesn’t have to be a huge expense… shop around the house.

A Collaborative Effort

I may be the only one in this family with the official title of “Interior Designer” but ML loves to get in on the action.  Maybe it’s because he majored in Architecture for a semester or tends to have a little big of OCD come out every once in a while.  Who knows!  What I do know is that a few months ago he suggested we rearrange the china cabinet.

dining room

You can get a feel for where the china cabinet hangs out in our dining room in the picture below.

Why did he want to rearrange it?  Well he thought the orange carnival glass blended in too much with the color of the wood and really wanted to use some of our Crossroads pottery (see where we used it here).  The blues and greens in it would really stand out against the deep colors of the wood.  I liked his suggestion but just never got around to making the changes… remember I told you I was a procrastinator.

Finally, last week when I pulled the carnival glass out to decorate the dining table for Fall I took advantage of the opportunity and started rearranging.

As much as I would love to tell you this is the arrangement I came up with… it’s not.  ML jumped in to help out to.  I guess it was more of a collaborative effort.  Yeah, we are dorks like that.  Spending our free time rearranging our china cabinet.  It’s what true love is made of!

It makes me so happy to see the goblets in all their glory displayed in the china cabinet.  They really do pop!  And I have to admit everything looks a little bit more orderly with the goblets and glasses both arranged in rows now.  Plus, since we use these from time to time it’s nice to have them so easily accessible.

Dining room

We left our actual china on display on the middle row.  It just wouldn’t be a china cabinet without some china on display!   I did de-clutter the row a little but decided to keep the monogramed “S” and butterfly from our wedding cake on display.

We really aren’t through with the top row yet but this is what we have so far.

The crystal bowl is temporary.  While brainstorming for the kitchen renovation (no we haven’t forgotten about it), ML mentioned that he would like to incorporate a wine rack.  Well, incase you can’t remember our kitchen is small.  Small even in wall space.  So we don’t actually have room for a wine rack.  Before starting on this little china cabinet update I grabbed a wine bottle from the fridge and checked to see if it would fit.  It does!  So, eventually we would like to find a small wine bottle holder to place on the top row.   Which would work out great with the goblets being stored here as well.  Two points for functionality!

So, there you have it.  A quick little update to our china cabinet.

What quick updates have you done lately?  Do you and your spouse like to work on projects together or is it best if you just handle it?  Or have you been like me and have been putting off an easy project for months now?

Fall Bridal Shower Tablescape

Tomorrow night I am hosting a wedding shower for one of the girls in my Bunco group.

It’s just a small get together for the girls in the group but I want it to be something special for the bride-to-be. Just like with my Fall mantel I worked with what I had minus the pumpkins I purchased last week.

The silver table runner I have used for years and used to be a staple in my table decor until we refinished the table earlier this year. Because it is silver I thought it added a touch of elegance to the table and would be perfect for the occasion.

The repetition of orange works works to unify the carnival glass and pumpkins scattered along the table. For the shower I plan to fill the plates and bowls with fruit and cheese making them easily accessible by being in the center of the table.

One of the things I love most about our Casfina everyday dishes is they go well with so much and work for every season. Fall… for instance in this case. These are our everyday salad (or we don’t have much leftover but if I put it on a small plate no one will notice) plates. They work perfectly with all the orange on the table and should be the perfect size for some light (or heavy if anyone decides to bring chocolate) munchies.

The monogramed napkins are from our rehearsal dinner. I like to pull them out for special occasions. The wooden napkin ring brings a little bit of nature to the table and works well with the Fall theme.

The cute little glasses I picked up for a dollar a piece a couple of years ago at a church yard sale. I couldn’t pass up a great deal like that.

Since we have a chandelier above our dining room table I try to avoid making the centerpieces too tall. I don’t want it to look like I am trying to build the Tower of Babel up to the ceiling. This simple bowl filled with pumpkins remains low but has lots of color in for visual weight to really anchor the center piece to the table.

The table is all set and ready for the party. Now I just need to focus on the food. We don’t want the bride-to-be.. or the guests to go hungry!

What have you been transforming for Fall lately? Do you have any Fall dinner parties coming up? Which is your favorite part of party planning…. cooking or decorating? I’ll be honest mine is decorating. I don’t mind the cooking but I would much rather be eating.
