Noah Comes to Visit

In my last (rather long) post I shared about Esther’s surgery.  This was our first surgery in Birmingham since moving from there back in February.  This was also the first time Noah stayed with us instead of receiving some one on one time with the grands.

In the beginning we weren’t sure if Noah would get to visit Esther at Children’s Hospital of Alabama because they have placed her in the “burn unit” before for recovery.  We don’t mind the burn unit at all because the nurses are wonderful there… not that they aren’t on every other floor but they just have a special touch.  This time we were given a regular room which allowed for Noah to come and visit.

Noah & Esther

Michael Luke and I wanted Noah to see Esther in the hospital so she could begin to make the connection of how Esther get’s a “bubble” on her head and get to visit the place that Esther talks so much about.

Around 8:00 the night of Esther’s surgery I hear Michel Luke pulling Noah down the hall in one of the little red wagons that Children’s has to carry little ones (and your baggage) around in.  I went to meet them at the door and saw Noah’s grinning face.

I saw her grinning face then go into a look of shock.  “Did you prep her any for what she might see?”, I asked Michael Luke. “Oops! I forgot that part.”, he said.

We jumped in and got down on Noah’s level to welcome her to Esther’s room and tried to point out the positives in the room… like the tv with Brave playing and Esther (of course).  It took her all of about three seconds and then her face returned to normal and she piped up, “Hey, Esther”, as she walked over to her bed to hug her.

We’ve always pictured Noah as the doting nurse type and refer to her as the “supportive sister.” She immediately stepped into the role we envisioned for her.  She pulled up a chair next to Esther so they could watch Brave together and then occasionally would ask up what a piece of equipment was called.

She was all ears and eyes each time the nurse came in and was fascinated with the iv and every other wired contraption hooked up to Esther.  Noah & Esther Noah & Esther

I’m not sure if she actually has a future in medicine but it made for a pretty cool field trip for Noah!  How have your children reacted to visiting someone in the hospital?

“Family Friday” Special Monday Edition: The Big Transition

I know it’s Monday but I thought maybe your week would be a little better if we started out with a “Family Friday” Special Monday Edition!

You may remember a few months back we bought Noah her big girl bed and rearranged the room so we could have it set up for her.

One thing that I forgot to mention was that we didn’t transition her over to the crib immediately.  First she had to learn to fall asleep in her crib by herself.  Which in reality means, one of us staying in the room with her until she fell asleep.  Some nights it was quick, others we were there a while.  Nevertheless she finally got the hang of it.

Then, all her incisor teeth came in… at practically the same time.  Which was a major sleep disruptor.  We weren’t about to throw an extra curve ball at her then.  There were some nights where she just lay on the floor crying until the pain subsided.  My heart felt so sorry for her but she didn’t want to be held, or rocked.  All she wanted was to cry in her misery.  So I let her… and we survived and are happy to report that all four teeth made it in safely.

Which brought us to last week. The Big Transition. It was totally unplanned and unexpected.  Up until this point we had mainly used her bed for story time… that is until last Monday.  It was nap time, I placed Noah on her bed while I put clean sheets on her crib mattress.  By the time I turned around she was already twirling her hair and settling down in her bed.  She looked so comfy and peaceful so I decided to lie down beside and see what happened.

Noah Bed

This is the end result.  Some of you may have seen it on Instagram.

I was surprised but didn’t think it would be a permanent change.  Noah thought other wise.  Monday night she wanted nothing to do with her crib.  She insisted on sleeping in her big girl bed.  So we tried the same routine again.  Sleep didn’t come quickly though.  Her excitement compared to the excitement you feel when you move into a new house and want to get to know and explore every inch of it.  That’s what she felt like she had to do to her bed… until 11:30 p.m. when she finally crashed.

As I closed the door to her room that night I was a little sad.  My baby girl is growing up.  We might as well go ahead and start buying bedding for her dorm room.  It’s all happening so fast!

So for the past week she has slept through the night every night… except last night. I’m really surprised she made it that long.  Not that she doesn’t normally sleep through the night but I had been anticipating her rolling off the bed and waking up.  That still hasn’t happened thankfully and if it does we have the trundle bed rolled out so she will just fall from one mattress to another.  Last night she woke up because she lost her paci.  Instead of crying I woke up to her door opening… a new skill she learned last week.  I quickly led her back to her room and put her back in bed. After some tossing and turning she went back down and slept until this morning.

All of this just to let you know Noah is growing up!

Family Friday: The Big One Eight

Eighteen months is a somewhat major milestone in a child’s life. If anything it means they get a new wardrobe! If only we could get a new wardrobe every six months to a year as adults. Anyway, in honor of Noah hitting the big one eight I thought it would be fun to share what this little girl has been to much like I did last year when she was six months old.

For starters she is growing up way too fast and no longer has that baby look about her. What she does have though is an amazingly spunky personality. She is Miss Independent! She likes to feed herself, select and put her own shoes on, and try to do pretty much. anything on her own.

The name Noah for a girl means “movement” and she has lived up to. This girl likes to move, squirm, and dance and never stops. Unfortunately, it looks like she might have inherited her parents less than stellar dance moves. Sorry, Noah. I like to think that her dancing is her own little way of praising God. I’m sure he enjoys it.

In the past month or so we have really seen her vocabulary flourish to over forty words. I’m not sure if that is normal or not but it’s so much fun hearing her talk. I never thought bay bee (baby) could be so cute or bell-but (belly button) but my heart just melts every time I hear it.

On top of her vocal vocabulary she also has several signs that she uses to communicate with us. Such as: please, thank you, and milk. To any parent that may be wondering if teaching your little one sign language is worth it. It is. It’s so nice that she can sign “more” if she’s not through eating or “potty” if she has a dirty diaper.

Speaking of “potty”, today we are on day five of a three day potty training boot camp. We didn’t quite get trained in three days but day four was awesome with only one accident. Way to go Noah!

I’m not gonna say it’s been easy but yesterday was so worth all the accidents I cleaned up earlier in the week. Here’s hoping to another good day.

One of the biggest milestones is that
two weeks ago Noah officially quit nursing. A few years ago if you would have asked me about breast feeding I probably wouldn’t even have considered it an option. Now I can’t imagine not. It was such a wonderful bonding time with Noah, a money saver, and an excellent health benefit for Noah and me.

Eighteen months ago when we first started out I could barely
imagine making it six months. Six months came and then I decided to try for a year. After year, it was such a natural part of our time together I decided to just let her decide when to
quit. Which happened to be two weeks ago. I was a sad to see our special time end together and will always treasure those moments we had together. I doubt my mom is reading this post any
longer after reading this paragraph. She’s probably already trying to plan when Noah can come for a visit.

The sweetest thing about Noah being eighteen months is when she prays. Ok. She doesn’t really say her prayers or truly understand what prayers are but we tell her we are going to talk to God she clasp her hands together and bows her head… sometimes. It’s so sweet and almost makes tears come to my eyes. I can jus imagine God smiling down at her as she learns to have a
relationship with Him. The best part though is when we say, “Amen”. She claps her hands as says, “Yay!” There really is nothing sweeter than a childlike faith. So that in a nutshell is our little girl, Noah. One of the biggest blessings in our lives and a truly wonderful gift from God who loves to reveal His glory to me through her.
