Creating Our Stone Patio

Our front yard is slowly… but surely taking shape.

Before:

Exterior of House

During: A few weeks ago we dug up the shrubs and shaped the flower bed. Next, Michael Luke created a border for the flower bed with stone and relocated our flowers. And now for the back breaking fun part… laying the stone for our patio!

To start with ML leveled as best as he could the little plot of dirt for the patio. We did leave a little slope to help with water drainage. The last thing you want is a bunch of water collecting next to your house.
front-yard-stone-patioThese pictures really give you an idea for the size and shape of our future patio.
front-yard-stone-patioA small walk way will lead from the main sidewalk to the sitting area. The plan is for two adirondack chairs to sit in the area next to the house and two smaller adirondack chairs in the little area to the right. Like we had pictured here with our two chairs from the back yard.

After the dirt was leveled ML spread a thin layer of rock over the area.  We already had the rock on hand so this step was free.  The rocks work as a leveler.  The stones are varying thickness and would have been really wobbly if just laid on top of the dirt.  ML was able to use the rock to adjust as needed to the type of stone laid on top.

20130812-143254.jpgIf it sounds complicated it’s not.  Basically he just placed the stone on top of the rock and wiggled it around until it became level.  Fairly easy except for he had to do this for every stone so it did become a little time consuming.

20130812-143306.jpgWe chose to make the crevices between our stone fairly small.  The distance is entirely up to you.  Michael Luke worked with the area like it was a puzzle.  Laying pieces next to each other, trying to find the best fit for each one.  The perfect task for someone with OCD tendencies.  We also left about a two to three inch rock border around the entire patio.  It helps to visually separate the stone patio from the stone flower bed border.

20130812-143318.jpg 20130812-143329.jpgHe built up a gradual slope where the walkway meets the sidewalk.  We debated wether to leave it as a step down or raise it up.  I am really glad we chose to make the transition smooth.
20130812-143340.jpg Next, he spread two bags of top soil in between the crevices.   He emptied the soil out and then swept the patio spreading the dirt into the crevices.  Next, he tamped the dirt lightly to help pack it in.  Thankfully, as soon as he finished spreading the dirt we got a good summer rain that helped pack the dirt in really good. 20130812-143350.jpg 20130812-143405.jpg Finally, we go the fun part!  Planting our ground cover.20130812-143416.jpgWe chose Creeping Thyme which is a ground cover that can withstand moderate foot traffic.  We were back and forth on what type of ground cover to use. There are lots of options and we had it narrowed down to a sedum, miniature mondo grass, or the creeping thyme.

In the end we chose the creeping thyme because it is an evergreen, doesn’t grow very tall, and has a light lemon scent to it.   We bought an entire flat for $50, divided each plant in half, and spread them out so they have room to grow.  The creeping thyme is called a toe tickler and I just love that.  I look forward to walking on it barefoot and letting it tickle my toes!
20130812-143520.jpgI think it looks beautiful!  The thyme really softens the look of the patio and adds some beautiful color.  During the early summer it will be covered in small yellow blooms.  Michael Luke did a wonderful job and he is so happy that all the hard labor is over.  He put a lot of time and thyme into this garden but we will definitely enjoy it.

Doesn’t it look inviting?

Have you ever used creeping thyme before?  Or a ground cover in a walk way?  Do you have a summer project that is coming to a close?  Or maybe you just want your toes tickled?

Forming our Stone Flower Bed

Michael Luke and I (really just him) have been slowly working on updating our front yard this Summer.  It’s a work in progress but is slowly getting there one weekend project at a time.  When I last updated you our front yard had gone from this…

Exterior of House

to this.
exterior of houseIn short, ML dug up the four shrubs and had started carving out the shape of our new flower bed.  Leaving room behind to lay a stone patio where we hope place two adirondack chairs and the two pink chairs.  Giving us an area to sit and enjoy the front yard as well as interact with our neighbors.

Our next step was to buy rock to line the border of the flower bed with and to lay the patio with.  We checked out a local hardware store in our neighborhood first.  They had great prices and delivered but had a limited selection of stones to choose from.  So, we traveled down the road a little bit until we found a huge stone supplier.  Noah was enthralled with all the big trucks, bulldozers, and diggers.  We couldn’t have made her happier by taking her to zoo!

It didn’t take us long until we found the stone we were looking for… a stone that would compliment the exterior color of our house.
Noah.jpgWe ended up buying a ton of rocks  and having them delivered to the house.  And by a ton I don’t mean an exaggeration, I mean an actual ton of rocks!
front yardThankfully they delivered too for a small fee and the guys were nice enough to unload it piece by piece onto our driveway.  Noah may have skipped lunch just so she could watch them.

Noah.jpgNext, we used the water hose to outline the shape of the flower bed. It was easy to move around and gave us a pretty good idea of the shape we were hoping to achieve.  #PhotoBomberEmma

Next, Michael Luke started laying the stones.

My main role in all of this has been to keep Noah entertained and out of the way.  However, I did get to help a little in forming the shape of the flower bed with the stone.  We kept her occupied with some buckets and small stones.  She had lots of fun emptying each bucket and then filling the next one up.

So while she did that we were able to get this done.

front yardAhh! It was so rewarding and definitely a step in the right direction for our little front yard.  See how well the stones match the exterior of the house?  It was definitely the color and size stone we were looking for.  Next, ML relocated all our flowers to their new little home!

front yardDisclaimer:  We did not intend for the shape of the flower bed to end up looking like a fish.  Nor did we intend for the flowers to aid in this design by giving the fish fins and a tail.  In the end however that is what it looks like from this view.  Thankfully from the street it doesn’t resemble a fish at all and we really believe it will lose its overall fish shape once we get the patio laid and carve out a few more flower niches.  It is funny in the meantime though.

So what’s left?

  • laying the stones to make a patio
  • filling in the crevices between stones
  • adding adirondack chairs
  • making some ice cream to enjoy while sitting on our new patio. Have you ever had a surprise ending to one of your projects? A funny outcome? Or maybe it was just plain embarrassing? I want to hear.

Our In Between Yard

A few weeks ago the front of our yard went from this….

Exterior of Houseto this…exterior of house

It’s not really a before and after picture comparison but more of a before and sort-of in between comparison.

Let me explain.  You see ever since we moved into this house six years ago I have wanted to dig up the shrubs.  exterior of house

There was nothing wrong with them except for I just didn’t like them.  I didn’t like how much space they took up in our flower bed, how uniform they looked, and how common they are in landscaping.  Why do we feel the need to place shrubs along the exterior of our houses?

Michael Luke and I had talked about the situation on and off through the years but never really came to a solution. Until, this year!  We decided to dig up the shrubs, expand the flower bed, and create a stone patio with seating.  Obviously, we haven’t made it that far yet.

So far we Michael Luke dug up the shrubs and sent them to Memphis to be used in his brother’s yard.

front yardWhich means I am happy to report that no plants were harmed in the design part of this post. 🙂 Next, Michael Luke carved out the new outline for the flower bed and brought some chairs from the backyard to see spatially what everything will look like.

exterior of houseWe are really excited about this project and the mini break from working on the kitchen.  For years we have been wanting some sort of sitting area in the front yard.  We love our back yard area but you don’t really get a chance to meet your neighbors that way. Now, we will have a place to sit and watch Noah play and say “hello” to people as the walk by.  It should be pretty fun and hopefully in the end make our front yard look a little better.

Before we get to enjoy it though we still have a few steps to do:

  • buy rock
  • build up or new bed with a rock border
  • lay the patio
  • find some adirondack chairs for “Mommy and Daddy”
  • make some ice cream and cookies to eat while hanging out on our new patio 🙂

If everything goes as planned we should have this project wrapped up by the end of the month.  That’s hard to say though because I can’t really take credit for any of the work being done and finishing this project really depends on Michael Luke’s free time.

What Summer projects do you have going on?  Are you a fan of front porches/patios and getting to know your neighbors?  Or do you prefer to stay indoors where it’s cool?  Thankfully this Summer has been really mild in heat for us.  I wouldn’t want to sit outside in the middle of the day but I certainly would mind a little late afternoon relaxation spot.
