Family Friday: Thrift Store Challenge

Happy Friday, y’all!  Life’s been crazy here at Color Transformed Family this week.  For the first time ever I am serving as a juror on a civil case here in Jefferson County, Alabama.  The thought of jury duty to some seams like torture and completely boring but not me.  The geek in me is loving it.  Hopefully, we will wrap things up Monday and my little ho-hum drum life can get back to normal instead of sounding like the pages of a not so quite best seller John Grisham book.

Today’s post is a mixture of family and design fun.  Besides my love of writing posts for the blog I also love reading other people’s blogs.  One of my favorites is John and Sherry’s Young House Love.  They are the major superstars of DIY design bloggers.  John and Sherry have a huge following of readers and love to through out a good challenge every once in a while to get everyone involved.

Last week was no different.  They challenged all their readers to a “Thrift Store Challenge”.  To understand the basis for this challenge and the fun in it it is important to watch the video below for the song Thrift Shop by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis featuring Wenz.

Warning: This is a rap song and definitely not my first choice of music but it does bring a lightheartedness to thrift store shopping.  For the sake of all our ears I have attached the PG radio edit version of this song.

THRIFT SHOP (PG Radio Edit Clean version) – MACKLEMORE & RYAN LEWIS FEAT. WANZ from Garrett Wesley Gibbons on Vimeo.

So what is the challenge?

Step #1. Go to a thrift shop with – just as the chorus of the song says – “$20 in your pocket”and take a picture.

Step #2. Spend that $20 any way you’d like and photograph your spoils.

Step #3. Find one item (or more) referenced in the song and snap a pic.

Once, I showed ML the video he was completely on board. So last Saturday after work Noah and I met up with him for a little thrift shop shopping.

I have to preface our pictures depicting our shopping experience by saying that we almost completely failed in Step #2.  After two thrift stores I walked away with twenty dollars still in my pocket.  It’s not that I didn’t look for anything but I am on the hunt for a few specific items and just didn’t come across them that day.  I will totally fill you in whenever I do come across them though.  ML didn’t walk away empty handed though.  He found some kind of wooden sliding board that he needed for work. I don’t really know what it is or how it is used but I do know he was completely stoked about finding it.  Happy husband = Happy wife. 🙂

So here’s our twenty dollars and our thrift store finds of items referenced in the song.

Needless to say we had a great family night out and enjoyed the scavenger hunt challenge at our local thrift store.  Maybe next time I will actually find what I am looking for.

Did anyone accept the challenge?  Or have you ever been on a scavenger hunt at the thrift store?

P.S. Noah was sporting a black eye in the pictures above.  Not because she was trying to get her thug on but because she slipped and hit her head on the bed.  Thankfully, with a little hugging and help from her paci she bounced back to her normal self in no time.
